Ashes 2021-22: There Is No Contest At All- Aakash Chopra On Australia’s Dominance Over England

Aakash Chopra

Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra has expressed disappointment over the current Ashes series where one team is completely dominating the other. Australia is well en route to win the Adelaide Test and go into a 2-0 lead over England.

The first Test was lop-sided where England had a couple of good sessions. The story is similar in the ongoing second Test at the Adelaide Oval where the English batting has collapsed once again. The Ashes series is quite hyped but it eventually ends up being a no-contest with the home side winning comfortably.

The opposing team has been thrashed in a way. It seems one team is playing and the other is participating. I don’t remember when England defeated Australia in Australia, God only knows.

Generally, the home team wins if we see the last many years of the Ashes. It is the same story here as well. Last Ashes was an aberration where there was a contest but here there is no contest at all,” Chopra said in a video on his YouTube channel.

“Only Joe Root and Dawid Malan are doing the batting”- Aakash Chopra

Apart from England captain, Joe Root, and top-order batsman, Dawid Malan, none of the English batsmen have made useful contributions. There have been a couple of cameos here and there but Australia has comfortably managed to outscore their opponents.

If you look at the English team, it looks half the side. Only Root and Dawid Malan are doing the batting, the rest are just making up the numbers. Buttler, who is such a big name in white-ball cricket, looks a midget when you talk about Test cricket. I feel Ben Foakes is not far from being part of the team.

Bowling is looking very lacklustre. You don’t want to play Broad and Anderson all the matches. You are struggling in the pink-ball Test as well. England is going through a phase where it is difficult for them to compete. If Root single-handedly makes 100s or 150s in every match, you become capable of competing else you don’t have anything to do with the Ashes,” Chopra added.

Heading into Day 5 of the Adelaide Test, England was 82/4, needing 386 runs to win the second Test.
