Former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir believes that Virat Kohli has made Rohit Sharma’s job easier in Test cricket and he won’t have to worry much. India’s bowling might is what helps them win Test matches and Rohit is good at marshalling his troops as well.
Ahead of Rohit’s first Test as the captain and Kohli’s 100th Test, Gambhir opined that the transition in Test cricket is far easier compared to white-ball cricket. Ajinkya Rahane and Cheteshwar Pujara might have been axed but India has suitable replacements for them as well.
“I don’t think so. Because it won’t be a big challenge for Rohit Sharma in red-ball cricket. If you talk about Pujara and Rahane, you have experienced players like Hanuma Vihari and Shreyas Iyer who can replace them. Iyer had made a bright start to Test cricket,” Gambhir told Star Sports on the pre-match show.

Gambhir credited Kohli for improving the bowling standard, especially in Test cricket. He backed players like Mohammed Siraj and Ishant Sharma, who repaid his faith in them. Additionally, Rohit will begin his captaincy stint on home soil, far easier compared to playing overseas.
“When you have Ashwin, Jadeja, Shami, Bumrah, then it doesn’t get (difficult). Bowlers win you matches, batters only set the match up. Kohli has developed India’s bowling strength, so I don’t think it should be difficult for Rohit in red-ball cricket.”
“In India, it’s comparatively easier. You win the toss and bat. Overseas, it gets difficult because the condition is challenging. Here, you know you can set the game if you bat first,” Gambhir further mentioned.
Rohit won the toss and opted to bat first. He was dismissed for 29 off 28 balls in his first innings as the skipper.
