West Indies limited-overs captain Nicholas Pooran said the performance of the team in the first T20I against India was the worst.

Pooran and his men lost the game by 68 runs at the Brian Lara Stadium in Trinidad. India posted 190/6 as skipper Rohit Sharma top-scored with 64 in 44 balls and senior player Dinesh Karthik blazed 41 runs in 19 deliveries.

Barring Akeal Hosein, who registered figures of 1/14 from four overs, the rest of the West Indies bowling attack was taken to the cleaners.

The hosts lacked intent in the chase with not a single batter managing to score above 20. Opener Shamarh Brooks was the highest in the innings with 20 in 15 balls. West Indies finished their innings at 122 for eight.

Pooran expects his batters to give great starts to their innings and turn them into big scores.

For me, it’s just about batsmen getting starts. When we do get a start, it’s just for us to carry on – find a way to carry on and make it count. This is only our third T20 together as a team, and in the last 15 T20s, I think this is the worst performance,” Pooran said ahead of the second T20I match on Monday.

“We knew something like this was going to happen. Unfortunately, it had to be the first game in Trinidad, but we know as a team, we’re going to bounce back. The batsmen are ready for the challenge and can’t wait for tomorrow,” he added.

India have an edge of 14 to West Indies’s six wins in the head-to-head records between the two sides in T20 Internationals.

India and West Indies will play the second and third T20I matches at the Warner Park in St Kitts on August 1 and 2. Both teams will move to Florida in the United States of America to play the last two matches of this series.
