Director Martin Scorsese’s one of the most highly anticipated film, Killers of the Flower Moon, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro, is eyeing for a premiere at next year’s Cannes Film Festival.
According to Variety, written by Eric Roth and adapted from the best-selling novel Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI by David Grann, the film had been originally slated for 2023 by Apple. With filming wrapping on the production last year, there had been some hope that the movie would debut later this year for a 2022 Oscars campaign.
However, discussions between the filmmaker and the studio over bumping up the film’s release to 2022 occurred after Will Smith’s actions at the Oscars earlier this year changed Apple’s release strategy for its Smith-starring slavery drama Emancipation. Now, Apple is eyeing a May 2023 premiere at the prestigious Cannes film festival. A wide theatrical run would follow, before the film arrives for streaming exclusively on Apple TV+.
Killers of the Flower Moon will mark Apple’s first original film to get a full theatrical release.
