England wicketkeeper-batter Jos Buttler got out in the most unfortunate way in the ongoing second Test match against Australia on day 5. Buttler and Chris Woakes were defying the inevitable for as long as possible and Buttler succeeded in doing for 207 balls, but then was dismissed hit-wicket.

Chasing 468 runs to win in the day-night pink-ball Test match, Buttler and Woakes were fighting a losing battle as their two in-form batters Joe Root and Dawid Malan perished for 24 and 20 respectively on day four itself. Those had held the England batting together for so long, that the visitors were criticized for the remainder of batters not pulling their weight.

Chris Woakes made 44 in 97 balls and added 61 runs for the 7th wickets with Jos Buttler, who played 207 balls and 258 minutes to make 26 runs. His innings ended when trying to punch the ball off the back foot to the offside, he trotted onto his off-stump.

England Lost The Second Test By 275 Runs, Trail The Five-Test Series 0-2

The valiant efforts of Jos Buttler and Chris Woakes proved to be futile as Australia wrapped things up on day five with England being bundled out for 192 runs. Jhye Richardson took 5/42 including the hit wicket dismissal of Jos Buttler. Marnus Labuschagne was named Player of the Match for his 103 and 51 in two innings.

England, on the other hand, was criticized for not playing Jack Leach, whereas Nathan Lyon picked 6 wickets in the match. Even Nasser Hussain hit back at the England selection policies and asked them when will Leach play if not at the spin-friendly conditions in Adelaide.

He said: “But the ball was turning in Adelaide on day two and England chose to go into this match without a specialist spinner. It is one thing leaving Leach out in England where the Dukes ball moves all day long and four seamers can do all the bowling.

The sight of Nathan Lyon gaining turn and bounce and bowling with drop and drift on day four of the second Test raises a big question for England – if Jack Leach is not going to play at Adelaide on that pitch when will he?”

The third Test match will begin in Melbourne from December 26 onwards.
